If there’s any brand that needs no introduction, it’s Jeep. The company’s vehicles are so synonymous with off-roading and bundu-bashing that any 4x4 can pretty much be referred to as a ‘jeep’, although there’s nothing quite like the real thing.
Jeep’s origins as a manufacturer of military vehicles still shines through in the styling of the ever-popular Wrangler, an all-conquering off-roader that pays tribute to the original Willys Jeep of the 1940s. Over time, those army roots evolved into the birth of the SUV segment, a vehicle category that Jeep has had a say in since the 1960s!
Today, the brand forms part of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group, producing models like the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Compass, and of course the iconic Wrangler, still available in a whole array of variants, all fitted with those crucial solid axles.
Despite fierce competition from the likes of Land Rover and Toyota, Jeep has wedged its way into the hearts of many South Africans, from 4x4 fundis to city slickers with a love for chunky wheels. There’s no doubt that Jeeps will be popular here for as long as cars are sold!
