South Africans love a good vrrrpha, and no vrrrpha is more iconic than the car that gave rise to the term - the Golf GTI. Volkswagen South Africa has revealed the specifications for the SA-bound Golf 8 GTI. Here’s the scoop.
First things first. The Golf 7 GTI has sold 14 252 units in South Africa since its launch in 2013, making up 34% of all seventh-gen Golf sales in that time. It’s little surprise, then, that anticipation of the all-new model has been unprecedented, and now the excitement finally has some figures to work with.
The “most digitally advanced Golf GTI” ever packs some serious tech toys, boasting a fully-digitalised interior that covers everything from the digital cockpit to headlight controls and even swipe-compatible air conditioner touch pads.
There’s also plenty of other equipment that comes standard with the Golf 8 GTI. All buyers will be treated to 18” Richmond alloy wheels, a heated and leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, and GTI Vienna leather seats all round. Other standard features include keyless entry and start, App-Connect, cruise control, park distance control, and App-Connect functionality bolstered by wireless charging.
Now onto the good stuff: the all-new Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI has been given a healthy power boost from the previous model. The same 2-litre turbocharged engine now produces 11kW more, taking the power figure up to 180kW, with accompanying torque of 370Nm. There will be more vrrrpha-ing than ever thanks to the 7-speed dual clutch transmission, complete with flappy paddles and a 0-100km/h time of just 6.4 seconds.
As you’d expect, there are plenty of options boxes to tick when it comes to the Golf 8 GTI. Among them is Dynamic Chassis Control running gear which adds variable shock absorbers for a more individualised driving feel.
Inside the GTI, Volkswagen has once again made a Harman-Kardon sound system available, boasting a 12-channel amp and ten speakers in total, including a subwoofer. You can also opt for a panoramic sunroof, LED matrix headlights, a selection of styling packages, and several safety features that provide added peace of mind.
In addition to three standard paint colours, buyers can also choose from four metallic colours - Dolphin Grey, Atlantic Blue, Kings Red, and Reflex Silver.
Pricing has yet to be unveiled, and will be revealed closer to the launch date later this year.
